Ask three painters what it costs to repaint the outside of a house in Indiana and you may get three very different numbers. That is not always because one of them is wrong. It is usually because they are pricing three different jobs: different prep, different paint, different coats and a different idea of what counts as done.
True North Craftsmen does not publish a price list for exterior work, and an honest painter cannot price a house over the phone. What we can do is explain what moves the number, so that when you sit down with estimates you know what you are comparing. Every exterior estimate we write starts with Taylor Ly, the owner, walking the house in person.
What drives exterior house painting cost in Indiana in 2026
Indiana weather is the test any exterior paint job has to pass. Freeze and thaw, summer humidity, hail in May and drought in August all work on a finish. Most of what you pay for is the work that lets paint survive that, and most of that work is preparation.
Prep is most of the job
A good exterior starts long before the first coat. The house gets washed, failing paint gets scraped and sanded, cracks get filled, failed caulk gets replaced, bare and repaired spots get primed, and windows, roofing and landscaping get protected. Power washing takes off the mildew, pollen and chalking that paint will not stick to. Our power washing page covers that first step. A house with sound paint and tight seams needs less of this than a house with peeling trim and open joints, and that difference shows up in the estimate.
What the house is made of
Siding, brick, stucco and trim each take different products. Siding gets primed where bare wood shows and finished over sound prep. Brick gets a breathable masonry paint that does not trap moisture. Stucco gets a flexible elastomeric coating where the climate calls for it. A house with more than one surface type is really several small jobs on one address.
Which paint goes on
As a Sherwin-Williams Preferred Vendor, we match the product to the siding and its exposure. Emerald is the premium tier for siding. Duration is the heavy-duty, long-life option. SuperPaint is the everyday workhorse for standard jobs. Front doors and trim that get touched every day get Emerald Urethane. The product line is part of the price, which is why a named product matters when you compare estimates.
Two finish coats, not one
One coat over old paint is a recoat, not a finish. Color depth, resistance to sun and how well the paint actually bonds all depend on the second coat. When two estimates are far apart, check whether both include two finish coats on every surface.
Trim, doors and shutters
The accents get the closest attention, and they take the most hand work. On a front door we pull the hardware, finish the door in place or off site depending on the door, and rehang the hardware so the screws line up the way they came out. The more trim, shutters and doors a house has, the more of this careful work goes into the estimate.
The age of the house
If your home was built before 1978, ask every painter how they handle old paint. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains on its Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Program page that about three quarters of U.S. homes built before 1978 still contain some lead-based paint, and that anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in those homes must be certified and trained in lead-safe work practices. Scraping and sanding are exactly the kind of work that rule covers, so it belongs in the conversation about price and scope.
How to compare two exterior painting estimates
A low number is only low if it covers the same work. Before you choose, put the estimates side by side and look for these things:
- Is the prep written out, or is it a single line? Washing, scraping, caulking and priming should be named.
- Is the product named? "Exterior paint" could mean anything. A named Sherwin-Williams line tells you what is going on the house.
- How many coats, and on which surfaces? Two finish coats on siding, trim and doors is the standard to compare against.
- Which surfaces are included? Siding only, or siding, trim, doors, shutters and soffits?
- What happens if the weather turns? A painter who will not coat a damp wall, and who tells you the same day if rain moves the schedule, is protecting your finish.
- Does the estimate match the invoice? Ours is itemized, and the estimate matches the invoice, with no surprises added halfway through the job.
Why the cheapest bid is rarely the cheapest repaint
We will not be the cheapest bid you get, and we say so up front. The crew is small on purpose. Every member is hand-picked and trained by Taylor, there is no subcontractor cycle, and we do not run more than two jobs at a time in the field. Taylor is the project manager, so there is no one else to chase down. That is a constraint we chose, and it is the reason the trim on a True North job looks the way it does.
A finish that fails early costs you twice: once for the first job and again for the repaint. We would rather do the steps the first time than come back in a few years for a job we just finished. That is what Painting with a Purpose means on a ladder.
When to plan an exterior repaint
Exterior painting in Hamilton County goes best from late spring through early fall, when daytime temperatures hold and surfaces stay dry long enough to cure. As the season closes, this is a good time to get an estimate on paper, think through colors and plan the work for when the weather is right. If you are weighing inside work for the colder months instead, our post on why fall and winter suit interior painting explains the other half of the calendar, and our guide on why prep work separates a good paint job from a short-lived one goes deeper on the prep that drives cost.
